Federal Budget falls spectacularly short on housing for those most in need

[Sydney, 26/03/25] – The Sydney Alliance expresses disappointment over the lack of substantial new funds for social housing, renters and homelessness policies in the Federal Budget released yesterday, to address the needs of  thousands of families, renters, and vulnerable individuals struggling with the ongoing housing crisis.

"This budget was an opportunity for increased ambition on housing. Over the last 3 years this Government has shown that it is willing to address the housing crisis. The challenge is far from over - yet what we have is an election budget that fails to reckon with the needs of those hit hardest,” said Chantelle Ogilvie-Ells, Sydney Alliance Lead Organiser.

The Sydney Alliance has been calling for ambitious targets and long term funding for social housing and homelessness services, greater financial support for renters, and housing taxation reform to support housing stability. Its calls are based on listening to the members of its 40 civil society partners across Sydney, who earlier this month gathered at an 837 person strong forum in Western Sydney to press politicians on cost of living, housing, energy and climate.

“Rent makes up the largest portion of a renting household’s budget, and has been growing faster than wages,” said Leo Patterson-Ross, CEO of the Tenants Union of NSW, an Alliance partner. “This is the cost of living crisis putting greatest pressure on families’ health and welfare, putting people at risk of homelessness, and we need to see greater commitment to addressing it from the Commonwealth Government. Our housing system is failing to deliver safe, stable and affordable housing. We have seen small improvements but the Federal Government must do more to step up and meet the moment.”

The Alliance calls on the Federal Government to work collaboratively with state and local governments, community organisations, and housing advocates to deliver a comprehensive housing strategy that addresses both immediate and long-term needs.

"We urge the Government to listen to the voices of those directly impacted by the housing crisis, especially those on low incomes, and to commit to policies that create real, lasting change," added Cassandra Ngurah, a member  from Shelter NSW and co-chair of the recent forum in Western Sydney. “ The housing crisis is worsening daily, hitting Western Sydney hardest. One in 10 Australians live in Western Sydney. We’re the backbone of this city -essential workers, young families - told that hard work would pay off. We’ve done our part, yet we’re being priced out of our communities. Western Sydney deserves a better go."

The Sydney Alliance remains committed to advocating for bold reforms that prioritise affordable, secure and dignified housing for all. Its members are watching closely for further election announcements on housing in the coming weeks.
