Sydney Alliance supports YES in the referendum
On Wed the 13th the Sydney Alliance is organising its members to take action for Yes! Come along and have conversations, listening and sharing about why voting yes is important. We are running Street stalls in parts of Sydney where there has been less activity - and strong need for support - You won't be on your own! This will be an opportunity to see Sydney vote YES in the referendum and a chance to meet others from the diverse organisations of the Sydney Alliance

The Uluru Statement from the Heart working group is made up of passionate new and existing community leaders of the Alliance who are working together to support the Uluru Statement from the Heart national campaign From the Heart and work within our communities to drive decolonisation and empower relationships between First Nations and multicultural Australia.
We acknowledge that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander tribes were the first sovereign Nations of the Australian continent and its adjacent islands, and possessed under Aboriginal laws and customs. This the ancestors did, according to the reckoning of Indigenous culture, from the Creation, according to the common law from ‘time immemorial’, and according to science more than 60,000 years ago.
The Alliance recognises the history and connection of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to this country. We acknowledge for real change to happen, this must now be enabled through an Indigenous Voice to Parliament enshrined in the Australian Constitution.
Australia is at a point of change. Under strong leadership from First Nations, we have the opportunity to come together to demand constitutional recognition enshrining a Voice to Parliament, truth-telling and ‘Makarrata’ process, or coming together of all after the struggle.
Sydney Alliance can play a unique role in involving the diverse communities of Sydney to get deeply connected in this process. We already have over 150 people from diverse cultural and linguistic groups attend our ‘From the Heart – Walking Together’ workshops in Sydney. Internationally, we have contributed to the development of International Areas Foundation (IAF) training, titled “Wresting with the truth of Colonization” and have trained 80 people across five countries. We have made many submissions to the Voice to Parliament enquiry.
We meet monthly online to discuss and plan action within our own community organisations, as an Alliance and national campaign actions. We are action-based and strength-based, led by a team of co-chairs Nicole Laupepa, Paige Chowdhury, Andrew McCloud and supported by veterans Jacqui Parker and Mary Waterford and the Women’s Reconciliation Network. We are diverse group of people from across the community and have a range of experiences that we bring to working together and most importantly to taking action.
