Labor urged to act decisively for those who delivered election
MEDIA RELEASE 28th March 2023
For the first time in 12 years NSW Labor has claimed victory at a state election, thanks in part to Western and South West Sydney residents who showed up to the polls to vote for change.
Key marginal electorates became ALP gains this election including Parramatta, Camden, Penrith, Riverstone, and East Hills. Recently labelled as the ‘new working class’, these electorates are made up of essential workers and migrant families, many of whom are also renters.
Diana Olmos, an organiser from Sydney Alliance said, “This is a pivotal moment for NSW and just shows the strength and immediate interests of Western Sydney. You can’t win without Western Sydney. And you can’t win Western Sydney without renters, millennials, and migrant families. We are under pressure and expect action on housing, cost of living and energy bills.”
Joannie Lee, South Western Sydney resident and organiser at Democracy in Colour says, “The results of this election just shows how deeply our communities are hurting when it comes to the pressures of cost of living and how we want concrete measures to alleviate these stressors.”
“I’ve seen the effects on my family and so many other migrant families who are forgoing essential items just to stay afloat. As the newly elected state government forms, it’s critical that they remember who voted for them and act decisively.”
Olmos continues to say, “We’re expecting Labor to work quickly to reaffirm their commitment to Western Sydney - to renters, migrant families, young people, and essential workers. As the new State Government works on the budget and new legislation, we expect that the people of Western Sydney stay at the forefront of their decisions.”
Olmos concluded “Likewise as the Federal Government considers housing and energy measures in the May budget, they should hear Western Sydney’s message loud and clear.”
